my story

My love for fundraising was found during university. My marketing degree included a year's placement and I landed a much sought-after job with Esso Petroleum. I hated every minute of it, but learned lots about my values and priorities. In the evenings I volunteered - looking after rescued animals and birds at Wildlife Aid or proudly wearing a tabard with the League of Friends in the local hospital’s children's ward. When I returned for my fourth year I shifted tack, planning a career in fundraising and collaborating with CLIC Sargeant on my dissertation (exploring why donors give).

My first role was as a Community Fundraiser for Cancer Research UK where I built a fantastic foundation in community, events and corporate fundraising. Since then, I am proud to have been responsible for raising c.£16m income, held several senior management positions and worked within many fundraising disciplines. I set up the first fundraising department at North Bristol NHS Trust, running a successful capital appeal to refurbish the neonatal unit. Later, I joined the incredible Children's Hospice South West at Charlton Farm as Head of Major Gifts, soon after becoming Head of Fundraising.

I became a Fundraising Consultant in 2017; my work since has been diverse, including leading on capital appeals, writing large grant applications, critically reviewing the work of fundraisers, delivering feasibility studies, developing fundraising strategies, coaching fundraisers, advising on recruitment and evaluating strategic or fundraising/marketing documents.

I have experience of being a Trustee with Great Western Air Ambulance and was the founder of The Charity Eco Hub. I set up the Fundraising Consultants and Freelancers UK Group on Facebook which now has 2,000 members. You can read a little more about me on LinkedIn.
